FUELPHORIA’s Second Webinar Explores Catalytic and Biological Biofuel Pathways
11 December 2025On 4 December 2025, the FUELPHORIA project held its second webinar, titled Catalytic and Biological Processes for Sustainable Biofuel Production.
Launched in October 2023 and now entering its third year, FUELPHORIA is advancing towards full operation at its four demonstration sites. With preparatory work nearing completion, demo partners have begun implementing and optimising their technological processes. This webinar therefore offered a timely opportunity to hear directly from pilot leaders about the latest developments in catalytic and biological routes for producing sustainable advanced biofuels and RFNBOs.
Following an introductory overview of the project’s objectives and methodologies by coordinator Kostis Atsonios (CERTH), representatives from each demo site shared early laboratory findings, initial insights from their scale-up activities, the key challenges encountered so far, and next steps ahead.
The four pilot presentations included:
- Stefano Rebecchi, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP): Production of advanced biofuels from biogenic CO2 via a two-stage fermentation process (Demo 1, Belgium)
- Sergio Iglesias Vázquez, CIRCE: Production of methane from biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen (Demo 2, Spain)
- Petros Samaras, International Hellenic University: Sustainable valorisation of digestate for biodiesel production through microalgae (Demo 3, Greece)
- Marcos Latorre, PERSEO Biotechnologies: Bioethanol and e-methanol production from organic urban waste (Demo 4, Spain)
The event closed with an engaging Q&A session moderated by Kostis Atsonios, who addressed questions submitted by participants throughout the presentations.
