About
FUELPHORIA is an EU-funded Innovation Action project working to establish sustainable, competitive, and secure value chains for advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin.
Coordinated by CERTH, the project will set up and test a portfolio of 9 complete value chains in Belgium, Greece, and Spain.
Project partners will also evaluate the environmental performance of the FUELPHORIA renewable fuels, design innovative business models to prepare their market entry, and explore their export potential through collaboration with Africa.
Why FUELPHORIA?
The REPowerEU Plan of the European Commission recently highlighted the “necessity to scale-up renewables, achieve electrification, and replace fossil-based heat and fuel in industry, buildings, and the transport sector”.
The Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II revision aims to increase the advanced biofuel energy mandate to 2.2% of transport energy, as well as a new 2.6% energy mandate for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs).
Advanced biofuels and RFNBOs offer great benefits in terms of GHG reduction and fossil fuel replacement, ultimately supporting the path to zero carbon as planned by the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. However, there are concerns about their overall sustainability and the insecurity of the value chain.
FUELPHORIA’s objective is to demonstrate the establishment of sustainable complete value chains for advanced biofuels and RFNBOs for providing Europe with sustainable, secure, and competitive energy supply schemes.
