FUELPHORIA Partners Attend BioSFerA Project’s Final Event, Showcasing Advances for Sustainable Transport

21 March 2024

On March 19-20, 2024, FUELPHORIA’s partner, CERTH, joined the BioSFerA Consortium in Brussels for a pivotal two-day event marking the conclusion of the BioSFerA project, which focused on developing innovative, cost-effective models for producing advanced biofuels for aviation and maritime transport. Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, BioSFerA has contributed valuable insights and technologies over its four-year journey, aiming to support decarbonisation and sustainable transport in Europe.

The final event, held at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) Delegation in Brussels, featured presentations of the project’s final results and discussions with EU representatives, sector experts, and researchers. Keynote presentations included an overview from FUELPHORIA’s Project Coordinator Konstantinos Atsonios of CERTH, followed by two panel sessions that explored BioSFerA’s advancements in waste valorisation and pilot-scale syngas fermentation processes. This innovative approach was showcased through contributions from various FUELPHORIA partners, including BBEPP, CARTIF, CSIC, and ENVIPARK.

Interactive audience polls and discussions highlighted the interest in BioSFerA’s two-stage biological syngas-to-lipids fermentation technology, emphasising its potential benefits for low-CO2 emissions, circularity, and sustainable fuels for transport.

A concluding round table gathered biofuel industry players and policy experts to discuss the future market potential of BioSFerA’s model. Panelists, including representatives from Q8Research, Sumitomo SHI FW, and the European Commission, highlighted the critical role of advanced biofuels in the EU’s decarbonisation strategy and the need for collaborative efforts across policy, technology, and value chain players to drive a sustainable energy transition in aviation and maritime sectors.

Reflecting on BioSFerA’s achievements, Konstantinos Atsonios remarked, “BioSFerA leaves a considerable legacy on the portfolio of advanced biofuel technologies, contributing to the decarbonization of aviation and maritime sectors.”
